In Santa Sophia at Ohrid
a Madonna has been painted with a beard.
My knowledgeable Macedonian friend explains:
'The artist, so he thought,
was supposed to paint a Christ - 
and then forgot to wipe the Mother's beard.'
I do prize people's wisdom:
no one has annihilated
a child's daydream.
