SKETCHES OF A GENERATION
To B.

It is the taut, heavy
and the light, rich in oxygen;

that I can’t protect myself,
that I take you to myself
and give myself to you
with fewer defences, and
a door ajar on the self.

When your stomach is no longer
round and freshly white as a dish,
I shall tell you how you were born,
that it was Christmas Eve and
that the staff wore red caps
and smelt of mulled wine. When
you are older I shall
love you as a rusty
car worships its driver when
it’s driven into the garage of memory, as
a long forgotten can
loves the spoon that once
dug in it. This
is the enriched, the heavy;
the bearing of continuation.
